Hidden History 06/30/2009

Picture
There's a little bit of history hidden everywhere!  An environmentally-aware business downtown recently had to unearth some of theirs.  Evidently, the site was formerly a gas station, and the previous owners left without their gas tanks, which are pictured above.  The four tanks are being excavated, and the site will be restored as quickly as possible.

Flower Power! 06/19/2009

This past Tuesday a few of the staff members here at @discoverynorthbay had the task of beautifying the front flower beds! With some guidance from the Heritage Gardeners Coordinator we were able to plant all of the gorgeous flowers and plants, that are now available for your viewing pleasure!

An exciting new addition to @discoverynorthbay is the "Where Are You From?" board that will be located in the gift shop of the museum! With this map we can create a visual representation to show that people visit us from all over the world!

The name of the game is to pick out a pin, write your name or initials on the tag and stick the pin into the area that you're from! Easy as pie, we can't wait to get this thing covered in pins!

So if you're from somewhere near or far, hot or cold, foreign, or exotic- feel free to stop by, visit the museum and tell us where you're from!

Archives Online 06/14/2009

We are proud to announce that a small portion of our digitized collection is now available online!

As time goes on, @discoverynorthbay staff and volunteers hope to see a hugely-expanded digital archive.  For the time being, though, please take a look at the collection of documents we have posted in our "Archives" section.

Particularly interesting to me are the last three documents, which are letters detailing a real estate transaction from the early 1900s.  These letters tell a brief but interesting story about what life was like in North Bay, and in Medicine Hat, Alberta, in 1913.

Spring Time Fun! 06/14/2009

It has been a busy weekend here at the museum.  The staff spent an evening clearing out the flower beds around the building.  We look forward to seeing the floral displays that will soon fill them, thanks to the Heritage Gardeners!

Saturday afternoon, we were pleased to host a Sherlock Sleuth: Spy Edition themed birthday party.  The guests were given the mission of recovering their missing loot bags, all the while learning important facts about the history of North Bay.  The picture is of Special Agent Kyle taking some of his spy academy students through an exercise to improve their descriptive skills!

Some of the staff headed over the the Carousels after work on Saturday.  It was the perfect way to finish off the day! Check out the Carousels and the Mini Train on Memorial Drive, or stop by the gift shop at the museum for more information.

Yesterday, Kyle and I were given a task of utmost importance: change the burnt out lights in the display cases.  We worked hard, and soon had the job completed.  Though, really, he worked hard, and I took pictures of him in the display cases.  Nevertheless, The displays are now looking beautiful; brighter than ever!

A lot of our time recently has been spent working on preparing for the Haunted Downtown Hikes, we will be starting up the first weekend in July.  We are all extremely excited to get these underway!  So far, we have some brochures printed, some signs in the works, and a lot of new and thrilling ideas for our second season.  But, we are asking the public for help: if you have any, or know of any ghost stories, or strange things happening in the North Bay area, let us know! We'd love to look into stories coming right from our own community!

For those of you who are regular visitors to @discoverynorthbay, you might be seeing some new faces around the museum.  There are three of us who have just started work here (within the past week, in fact!), and we are looking forward to a busy and fun-filled summer!
