Hey Teachers!

The Discovery North Bay Museum will be offering brand new back-to-school programming this year as part of our educational initiative. The programming for our back-to-school tours is only available September-October so don't miss your chance to check it out.
Price: $5.00 per student, one chaperone free with every 15 paying students, bus driver admission free.

Our programs are designed to correspond with the Ontario Curriculum Standards. Social Science and History curriculum is met in our grades 1-8 programming focussing on the aspect of community and understanding our local communities past. Our high school programming which links with Ontario curriculum for History grades 9-12, focusses on the community as well as its change over time, including the communities voice on a provincial and national level. Links to the communities direct involvement in World War I and World War II are also addressed in our tours.

Tours Offered:
  • Haunted Downtown Hike: Join the DIscovery North Bay Museum Haunted Downtown Hikes in celebrating our forth season! Our stories are based on historical sites around North Bay that have been witness to some foul play over the years, resulting in numerous ghost stories. We will walk students through the downtown core sharing ghostly hauntings as we go. This program will run only until October 29th, 2011. Don't miss your chance to share this ghostly experience with your new students!
  • History Hikes: North Bay's downtown core is filled with hidden treasures. Let us take you and your class on a leisurely fall walk through the downtown. Students will see and learn about old buildings in the area and North Bay's past.
  • Museum Tours: Museum tours are among the most popular programs the Museum offers. Students are able to get involved with history over the years through our many interactive exhibits. The tour will begin with an interpretation of our many artifacts by an experienced staff and the day will cap off with some leisurely time in the museum exploring on your own.
  • Museum Tours part two: Don't forget that our Ice Age Mammals exhibition will be gone the end of September so don't miss out on this opportunity. There is more information about the Ice Age exhibition tours underneath. Remember, its a "mammoth" experience!

In addition to our many tours to choose from, we also offer workshops to correspond with each! These are designed to aid students in the understanding of the community and its past. Our workshops, as with our tours, are adaptable to all age groups, and staff are able to incorporate any additional information if asked for or provided by the teacher.
   Workshops include...
  • Worksheets to complete before and after the tour, giving students a chance to compare and contrast their knowledge pre and post tour.
  • Worksheets to complete throughout the tour inspiring students to ask questions and get themselves involved with the tour itself in order to find the answers to some tricky questions.
  • Our popular "Mystery Box Game".
  • Our equally poplar Junior Curator Program where students learn what it is really like to try to work with artifacts.

Introducing our Ice Age Mammals education programs!
Don't miss out, only available for a limited time!!

Our educational Ice Age Programs teach students many facts about the Ice Age Era focusing on the lives of those who lived and survived through most of this time period!
Corresponding with up-to-date Ontario Curriculum, our programs are designed to both teach and entertain students, opening their eyes to this whole new world!!!
Our programs are divided into three categories...
  • MAMMALS:  After making their first impressions on the world over 35 million years ago, mammals have come to rule the world around them. But where did mammals come from? Who are their pre-history relatives? How did they survive the Ice Age? Where did some of them go? These are the questions we strive to answer through this program. We will examine all different types of animals and the lives the lived. This program links to the Ontario Curriculum requirements and addresses mammals and the natural environment, the understanding of plants and animals, the negative and positive impacts of humans on the natural world, evolution, and finally cultural and social changes over time.
  • CLIMATE CHANGE:  Looking at the climate changes over the past million years can bring a better understanding of today's weather systems. Through an examination of the Ice Age climates, can the future really be found in the past?? Our Climate Change program links to geography climate change curriculum in grades 1-12.
  • ARCHAEOLOGY: Without archaeological research the mysteries of the past could not be solved. In this program students learn about the archaeologists and their journey to uncover these mysteries of the most recent Ice Age. This program links with units of extinction, migration, creation o f fossils and proper techniques for recording and organizing primary materials.

Don't miss out on you chance to explore the Ice Age with your class!! Programs are available until the end of September 2011. Call the museum for more information regarding booking and activities included.
