Our Programs
2009 Feature Program
Available April - August 2009
Green Legacy
This year, students will have the opportunity to experienced a guided tour of a national museum exhibit as "Green Legacy" visits Discovery North Bay. Green Legacy was created jointly by the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. The exhibit comes with a comprehensive education kit that supplements the 1500 square foot exhibition.
Student will enjoy learning about Canada's natural legacy. We will discuss the importance of urban greenspaces and why parks are so important to our communities and our planet. Have you ever had an upclose and personal encounter with Canada's most poisonous plant?
Child's Play (JK to grade two)
Children will explore the various games, activities and toys enjoyed by pioneer children. We will compare old fashioned toys with the toys of today. We include lots of playtime and hands-on fun as we enjoy the simpler toys of yesterday, learn the origins of popular children's games and dress up like children in North Bay 100 years ago.
Junior Curator's Club (Gr. 1-8)
The general store, a livery stable, and the school house, were all important places in early settlements and each used that are now obsolete. Students will step into history and look at artifacts and images of North Bay's early years, examining materials, trademarks, and more. This program uses unique object learning principles to study the actual belongings of North Bay's earliest residents.
TALES FROM A CEMETERY (Gr. 3-8)
Explore North Bay's local history and geography as well as the visual arts through an in-depth study of cemeteries. By visiting Union Cemetery in North Bay, we will look for historic clues about the early settlers to the area, learn to read a gravestone and interpret symbols and inscriptions, discuss location and environment of a cemetery, and end the program with sketches and rubbings of gravestones.
Nipissings: The Way of the Manitous (Gr. 3-8)
Students will explore the world of our country's First Nations through a discussion of our local native group, the Nipissings. Artifacts from the collection, the telling of local native legends and hands-on activities will help the students understand how the environment played an important role in the lives of the Nipissings and how interactions with Europeans changed their world.
History Hike (Gr. 3-8)
This popular program is guided through the sidewalks of downtown North Bay. We will examine the area's first school house, first library and some early homes. North Bay's downtown is full of exciting historical landmarks that tell the story of our beautiful Northern Comunity.
