Green Legacy
April 22nd to August 23rd 2009
Green Legacy is an innovative collaboration between the Canadian Museum of Nature (CMN) in Ottawa and Royal Botanical Gardens (Burlington/Hamilton) to produce a national traveling exhibition and related programs about Canada’s rare and endangered native plant species.
This family-oriented, bilingual exhibition explores the beauty, diversity and vulnerability of Canada’s native plants. It addresses concerns over endangered species and the issues surrounding the survival and recovery of threatened plants. Green Legacy will generate awareness of the natural and man-made causes of rarity among wild plants and the loss of biodiversity. By profiling efforts to protect and recover species at risk , it will encourage visitors to take responsibility for the fate of our native plantscapes and to get involved at the community level.
Connect with Canada’s Native Plantscapes
The 1,500 square-foot traveling component of Green Legacy shows how native plants create our sense of place by connecting us to the landscape of long ago. A plant “hall of fame” for Canada’s native plants provides a wealth of interesting facts, ranging from Canada’s oldest-living tree (Eastern white cedar) to the world’s smallest flowering plant (Watermeal). Numerous activities such as puzzles, quizzes, games and the new Green Legacy Web site offer visitors a fun way to learn about and appreciate our natural biological heritage.
